SANCTUARY

Glen Eira City Council’s Gallery presents Sanctuary, an exhibition which explores the notion of the garden as a sanctuary or site for reflection, contemplation and healing in contemporary culture.

From Friday 4 March until Sunday 10 April, a new series of photographs — commissioned by Council in 2015 — of local residents’ gardens by Ponch Hawkes, will be on display, along with works by Natasha Bieniek, Jane Burton, Kevin Chin, Siri Hayes, Christopher Koller and Janet Laurence.

The exhibition addresses concerns with environmental sustainability and regeneration; the interrelationship between the natural world and people; culture and nature; history and memory. Shifting between the realms of private and public garden sites in contemporary and historic suburban and regional locations, this exhibition illuminates our powerful connection with the natural world and shifting cultural, social and environmental concerns.
